OpenAI’s DevDay Brings Real-Time API and Other Treats for AI Application Developers
It’s been a tumultuous week for OpenAI, marked by executive departures and significant fundraising developments. However, the startup is back in action, attempting to persuade developers to build tools with its AI models at its 2024 DevDay.
New Tools Announced
OpenAI announced several new tools on Tuesday, including a public beta of its ‘Realtime API’, designed for building apps with low-latency, AI-generated voice responses. While not identical to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, the Realtime API is an impressive offering that closely resembles it.
No Slowdown in Progress
In a briefing with reporters ahead of the event, OpenAI chief product officer Kevin Weil emphasized that the recent departures of chief technology officer Mira Murati and chief research officer Bob McGrew would not affect the company’s progress. "I’ll start by saying Bob and Mira have been awesome leaders," said Weil. "I’ve learned a lot from them, and they are a huge part of getting us to where we are today." He continued, "And also, we’re not going to slow down."
OpenAI Operates in an Increasingly Competitive Space
As OpenAI undergoes another C-suite overhaul – a reminder of the turmoil following last year’s DevDay – the company is trying to convince developers that it still offers the best platform for building AI apps. Leaders claim that more than 3 million developers are currently working with its AI models, but OpenAI operates in an increasingly competitive space.
Cost Reduction
OpenAI noted that it has reduced costs for developers by lowering prices and offering more affordable plans. This move is likely aimed at attracting more developers to its platform, particularly those who may have been deterred by the higher costs associated with using OpenAI’s services.
No New AI Models Announced
In contrast to last year’s DevDay, where OpenAI announced several new AI models, this year’s event saw no such announcements. Developers waiting for OpenAI o1 (not the preview or mini version) or the startup’s video generation model, Sora, will have to wait a little longer.
Revenue Share Program
OpenAI also mentioned its revenue share program with popular creators of GPTs but did not provide further details on this initiative.
